Ed van der Elsken – Love on the left bank
PARIS TIPS – First year of university I was doing a visual research about Chloé. As Gaby Aghion was very inspired by those cool kids of left bank in Paris, I came accross to some of Ed van der Elsken’s photographs. My teacher advised me to search his book Love on the left bank which took me almost a year to find (ok I wasn’t looking too hard), until one day I stopped by at Book Marc searching something completely else, but oh the excitement when I saw the book!
So you can imagine my excitement when yesterday I was doing a list of must see current- and upcoming exhibitions. In my favourite museum in Paris, Jeu de Paume, there’s going to be Ed van der Elsken exhibition starting in June 13th. I migh have to see it twice.
I love the Parisian ones just not the low light graininess. Early Nikon?

To me it brings a certain authenticity to his photography, which is a good contrast to the fact that the story behind the photos shot in paris was actually not authentic at all. But then this is just a matter of taste 🙂

Yes I think the use of the mirrors and reflections and Love was all the rage probably. I think a lot of people ran from the old Nikon 35mm to the Rolleiflexes
